Panerai CEO, Jean-Marc Pontroué Dicusses About The Brand’s Future

Jean-Marc Pontroué, who took over as CEO of Panerai this April, has spent a lifetime working with some of the world’s biggest luxury brands. He was with Givenchy for five years, followed by an 11-year stint at Montblanc, and was most recently the CEO of Roger Dubuis for six years. He was in Mumbai recently to celebrate the opening of the third Panerai store in the country, where he met MW for an exclusive interview. Here is an excerpt:

The Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days PAM00372, or more affectionately known amongst Paneristis simply as the PAM 372 (PAM372), was first seen at SIHH 2011. This is a story of fantasy, which is told of the reverse … it tells what happened with a watch and a strap of the present, but that it was made to remember a past … the Second World War.

Who knows if the soldier who took the watch turned out to be luxury, did it to count the hours left to go home … to see his wife, his children, his family … who knows what happened during the hours I marked were clocked during the war years …

This is a tribute to the human beings who gave their lives to defend freedom, their people and their country. To all those who suffered the horror of war.

“Weekend Photo-Session” Panerai Luminor Base PAM00390 44mm Boutique Special Edition.

Like every weekend I’m not traveling (something strange), I take my time to do some detailed photos of watches and straps. In this case the session has been for an iconic watch within the Panerai brand and a strap made by hand by Peter Gunny (Gunny Straps) in crocodile according to the special dial color of this limited edition watch.

Pre-SIHH 2019: The watches you’ll want to keep an eye on next year

Like clockwork, the dawn of a brand new year could only mean one thing to watch enthusiasts: That the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) is about to be set in motion. Held from 14 – 17 January 2019, the important watch fair will once again be ground zero for new watches, trends, and innovations by both established institutions and independent watchmakers.

The 29th edition will take place in Geneva again, showing 35 exhibitors that include newcomers such as last year’s Hermès, F.P. Journe, and Romain Gauthier. This year, the trend for retrospective releases continues, with manufacturers clamouring to revive iconic models for their discerning 21st century customers. To get you just as psyched for SIHH 2019 as we are, here are some of the watches you’ll want to keep an eye out for next year.
